There are many styles of murals; some are graphic, some narrative, some graffiti-inspired. When painting murals, I choose to create environments. Whether it’s a dining room that “opens” onto a Tuscan garden, a breakfast room that has become a Mexican veranda, or the ocean view that might exist if there were no intervening buildings, all is possible with paint. Bare, enclosing walls dissolve, allowing the imagination to take flight, softening hard edges, reawakening memories.
Starting with an idea or an image supplied by a client, I research and take photos for inspiration and reference. Next comes the maquette, a full-scale design of the space. Then it’s brought to life on the wall. I enjoy including personal details that are meaningful to the client — hollyhocks and hedgehogs that lived in a cherished childhood garden, a plane with a particular call number, a certain someone’s catcher’s mitt, a particular name hidden among other names on signs.
Creating the best environment for YOU by altering and enhancing your surroundings is a gift to both yourself and those around you. What colors, what styles, what settings bring you inspiration or calm or happiness? What do you need to see in order to feel your best?
